Professor Li Shiming is the Director of the Department of Diabetic Foot Disease. He is the former Chairman of the Diabetes Center of General Hospital of the Air Force of the Chinese PLA, and is a renowned diabetes foot disease specialist with an international reputation. Under his direction, diabetic foot disease management in this department includes diabetes control, treatment of infection, improvement in peripheral blood supply and microcirculation in the foot, which aims to reduce the need for amputation and improve the quality of patient's life. Combining western medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine, patients receive oral and intravenous treatment simultaneously as well as limited surgical treatment for foot necrosis. The results of this treatment show that improving circulation with local treatment leads to a significant improvement in diabetes foot disease. In the hospital the healing rate of wounds is 85.7% with this treatment, and the amputation rate is 1.7%. Continuous blood glucose monitoring systems, a color Doppler (heart and limb) machine, a digital angiography system, micro-syringe pumps, nail fold microcirculation investigations, abdomen ultrasound diagnosis machine and a spiral computerized tomography scanner, are all available for diagnosis and treatment of diabetic patients attending in this department.
